With a new year beginning it is an ideal time to begin some new habits that will stand to you as the months go on. Taking up a simple and effective skincare routine can transform how your skin feels and looks and minimises the impact of skin conditions. There are some key steps to include in your routine that will make a big difference to your skins overall health and ultimate appearance, lets examine what each of these steps do.

Cleansing

Cleansing is the most important step of all. Cleansing the skin twice a day is so important for removing sweat, debris, makeup, pollution and dead skin cells. A clean and clear canvas is so important for the penetration of other serums and creams so making your products work harder for you.

Double cleansing in the evening time is super important for a number of reasons- To loosen foundation and remove eye makeup, to soften the skin and allow for any active cleansers to work more efficiently.  A double cleansing routine does not need to be complicated or expensive. Here is an excellent option using products from different brands.

Toning

Toning the skin after cleansing is a step that many people will miss from their routine. The purpose of using a skin toner is to restore your skin’s natural pH levels: after cleansing our skin, the pH levels can get out of balance because of the cleanser’s alkaline nature. Using a toner can restore skin’s natural pH almost instantly. It is an ideal stage to introduce a skin treatment- exfoliating toners for example.

Skin toner ingredients can include acids, antioxidants, glycerin and other anti-inflammatory ingredients. One of the major benefits of facial toners is they can easily penetrate your skin to give it a quick fix of hydration and sweeps away dirt and dead skin cells that your facial wash may have failed to remove.

Toners tend to fall into two categories Active and Inactive toners.

Active toner will contain an ingredient such as an acid to help exfoliate the skin gently and gradually. Such as the Exfoliate toner from Pestle & Mortar.

An inactive toner is useful to hydrate and rebalance the skin after cleansing, an excellent rebalancing toner is the NUXE Very Rose Refreshing Toning Mist

Serum

The Serum stage of any routine is the perfect time to introduce an active ingreatn that is treating a skin concern such as ageing, pigmentation or breakouts. Serums are designed to deliver active ingredients deeper in the skin as the molecules are smaller and the consistency thinner to allow them to work better than a moisturiser. This is the ideal stage to introduce a treatment to the skin, when the skin is prepped for the active ingredient and for it to be delivered deep into the epidermis.

A hydrating serum such as the Skingredients Skin Veg uses hyaluronic acid as well as other brightening and plumping ingredients to work on the signs of dehydration in the skin.

La Roche-Posay Retinol B3 Serum will introduce the powerful antiaging ingredient retinol to your skincare routine to work on lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores and skin texture.

Moisturiser

The moisturising stage of the routine is one that most of you will be familiar with. A lot of moisturisers contain active ingredients but beware that the % is a lot lower than in serums. Moisturisers will work on the surface layer of the skin and is essential for dry skin types in particular or in colder weather.

Day creams and night creams generally differ in the amount of moisturising factors and the formula makeup to either remain lightweight for a day cream and rich for a night cream. Find a moisturiser that you enjoy using and feels right on your skin and keep your skins barrier in tact.

Bioderma Hydrabio Creme Rich Moisturising Care is the perfect for solution for tight, uncomfortable, dry, dehyrated skin. This rich, creamy moisturiser soothes skin restoring comfort and boosting moisture and hydration levels.

SPF

The SPF step is non-negotiable for healthy glowing skin.  Sun damage is the number 1 cause of the signs of aging. UVA rays are responsible for the breakdown of collagen and elastin meaning the skin looses bounce, density and elasticity. Wrinkles, fine lines and sagging, applying any other products and ingredients to the skin topically is a waste if we are not applying an spf every day.
