Supporting Immune Health During the School Term
By Liz O’Hagan, Pharmacist & Integrative Health Expert
As children return to school, they’re exposed to a wide range of germs, making it important to prioritise their immune health. The school environment, with its close contact and shared surfaces, can challenge the body’s natural defences. Here are some practical tips for supporting immune health throughout the school year.
Balanced Nutrition
A well-balanced diet strengthens your immune system, helping your body to fight off infections and diseases. Nutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc, and antioxidants play key roles in enhancing immune function and reducing the risk of illness. Include a variety of colourful fruits and vegetables in the diet, which are full of immune-boosting vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Sambucol is a great supplement to give kids from 3 years and up, to give their immune system a boost during the school term:

Try to limit processed foods and sugary snacks, which can weaken the immune system. Pack lunches with whole foods such as whole-grain sandwiches, yogurt, nuts, and fresh fruits. Smoothies with spinach, berries, and chia seeds are also an easy and nutritious option.
Fish oils, like Eskimo chewable tablets, are another super supplement to boost immunity as well as brain function:

Revive active supplements are a great all-rounder, especially for fussy eaters, to ensure they are getting all of the nutrients needed to keep them well and healthy.
Prioritize Sleep
Lack of sleep can lower the body’s defence mechanisms. Children and teenagers need more sleep than adults – between 9 to 12 hours per night, depending on age. Establish a consistent bedtime routine, avoiding screens at least an hour before sleep, to promote better rest and recovery.
Magnesium body spray is a great way to create a soothing wind-down ritual before bed, aiding relaxation of muscles for a restful night’s sleep.

Physical Activity
Regular movement keeps the immune system alert and strong, while also supporting mental health and stress management. Encourage children to stay active through sports, outdoor play, or even simple activities like walking to school.
Hydration
Staying hydrated is often overlooked but is essential for immune health. Water helps flush out toxins and keeps bodily functions running smoothly. Make sure children have a water bottle with them at school and encourage regular drinking throughout the day.
Good Hygiene Habits
Teaching children proper hygiene can reduce the risk of infections. Regular handwashing with soap and water is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs, especially before eating and after using the bathroom.
Manage Stress
Stress can weaken the immune system, making the body more vulnerable to illness. Encourage activities that help children unwind, such as reading, drawing, or spending time outdoors. Maintaining a balanced schedule, without packing in too many extracurricular activities, can also help manage stress levels.
By incorporating these simple habits into daily routines, parents can help support their children’s immune health throughout the school term. Small changes in diet, sleep, activity, and hygiene can make a big difference in keeping kids healthy and energized for learning.
