I’m all for ageing gracefully and I really think we need to mentally accept that as the years go on our skin will change – that’s ok! My opinion is we should all aim for healthy skin at all ages, healthy skin always looks great at any age. Vitamin C works in a number of ways to boost the health and appearance of the skin.

As you know I’m Brand Ambassador for Meaghers and in this Blog, we have Oonagh from Meaghers sharing her expertise on Vitamin C – The Skin’s Wellbeing Vitamin.

Vitamin C is one of the most well-established and powerful ingredients that contribute to a healthy immune system but vitamin C is also essential to good skin health. It is essential to help protect cells and keep them healthy. Because the body does not produce Vitamin C, it is essential that we get the required amount from our diet or failing that supplements.

‘Healthy skin always looks great at any age.’

  • As a Protector

Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that can neutralise and remove oxidants, such as those found in environmental pollution, like car exhaust, cigarette smoke, certain chemicals, even alcohol and processed foods. As an antioxidant it helps form a kind of bubble wrap around cells to protect from these outside aggressors and from UV rays.

  • Collagen and Elastin Formation

Wrinkles, sagging skin that has lost its stretch and bounce, and stiff joints are all signs that the body is producing less collagen. Think of the skin as a mattress and the collagen is the springs that keeps the skin bouncy, strong and full. Collagen and elastin are two similar, fibrous proteins that help form the connective tissues of the body, elastin gives the skin its stretch and elasticity.

Vitamin C stimulates this collagen and elastin formation in the dermis, the lower level of the skin.

  • Wound Healing

There is a lot of research that demonstrates that Vitamin C in the skin is essential to efficient wound healing. It not only helps with collagen formation but also the  protection of the healthy fats in the skin, all essential for effective and speedy wound healing. Vitamin C is also necessary for the maintenance of healthy connective tissue, which gives support and structure for other tissue and organs

  • Inflammation and Redness

Vitamin C isn’t just important for helping to keep signs of premature aging at bay. The anti-inflammatory properties of Vitamin C help support weakened blood vessels. Redness can be caused by blood vessels that dilate too easily, therefore strengthening these blood vessels with Vitamin C can counteract the inflammation and reduce redness.

  • Pigmentation, Age Spots and Uneven, Dull Skin

Vitamin C effectively treats hyperpigmentation because of its powerful antioxidant properties and its ability to inhibit melanin formation (what gives the skin its pigment) it also evens skin tone and brightens the complexion.

How to get Vitamin C to the Skin

It is important to eat a diet rich in Vitamin C but if you are concerned about Vitamin C deficiency there are a number of ways to introduce vitamin C to the system.

Supplementation of Vitamin C means that the precious vitamin can get to work in the body to improve overall health and wellbeing.

What Supplement to Choose

Unfortunately it is difficult for the body to absorb large amounts of standard vitamin C all at once because of its inability to withstand the harsh digestive processes in the body.

With regular Vitamin C supplements (tablets and effervesants), the body can only absorb up to 200mg of standard vitamin C at a time, the rest is rapidly eliminated from the body through the urine. Much higher doses can cause gastric distress including gas, cramps and diarrhoea.

Until recently intravenous delivery of vitamin C has proven to be the most effective route for absorption, but this method of delivery is both costly and impractical. Who has the time to run to the doctor for an IV!! However, Liposomal vitamin C allows you to take vitamin C orally ensuring it reaches the cells where it is needed.

I like to recommend Altrient C because it is backed by science, it’s all about the delivery of the vitamin C to the cells. Their unique method of delivery protects the vitamin C from oxidation and the digestive system which ensures almost 100% bioavailability.

Vitamin C and the Skin

An independent double-blind, placebo-controlled study carried out by Princeton Consumer Research Centre, proved a staggering 61.4% increase in skin firmness and elasticity and a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on both the face and body. In the study the participants were taking 3 sachets of Altrient C a day over a 16-week period. At week 8 elasticity had increased by 40%, by week 12 it had reached 60.8% and by week 16 it had risen to 61.4%.

Topical Vitamin C and skin health

Like any active ingredient in topical skincare products Vitamin C is delivered through the skin barrier much better through a serum than any other preparation. Vitamin C serums are acidic, which means they slough away dead cells from the skins surface leaving it brighter and smoother. It is used topically to fade brown spots without altering normal skin pigmentation and when vitamin C hits the skin the skin starts to react by producing collagen and elastin the skins plumping and stretching proteins.
