A new month has arrived, and we have left behind all the excesses of Christmas and hopefully are feeling positive about heading into the new year. One huge mistake that many of us make when approaching a new year is trying to make new years resolutions and trying to change too much too quickly. This year we want to invite you to take the new year at your own pace. Very often when it comes to health and wellbeing the small positive habits that we can adopt and crucially stick to, make the biggest difference long term. Improving the health of our skin is no different.

Here I will explain how 5 small skincare habits can transform the health and appearance of your skin in the long term.

Stay Hydrated

The adult human body is 60% water, and your blood is 90% water. Drinking water benefits the whole body in a million ways. From flushing out toxins to preventing acne, water can be the most inexpensive solution for skin issues. Dehydration leads to increased Trans epidermal water loss (TEWL) and damages the skin barrier. Barrier damage causes premature ageing and other skin issues like frequent acne breakouts or extreme dryness. Drinking water daily and using a rehydration serum, as well as protecting the skins barrier function is the best way to ensure your skin remains hydrated.

Double Cleanse

Double cleansing is the single most important step in any skincare routine and the benefits of double cleansing in the evenings can be seen in a matter of weeks. Using two cleansers or cleaning your skin twice ensures you remove stubborn makeup and SPF remember most makeup is designed to last on your skin and can be difficult to remove in one cleanse and will ensure you get the most out of your skincare. A good double cleanse leaves your skin clean and clear of makeup residue and dead skin cells, which means your targeted serums, face treatments and moisturisers will be able to penetrate the skin and work their magic without anything getting in the way.

A little bit of January luxury and the rolls Royce of double cleansing routines is the erase and renew routine from Pestle and Mortar. Use the rich erase balm to remove makeup and any remains of the day and follow up with the renew face wash to soften, smooth and illuminate the skin.

SPF

The number one tip for healthy glowing skin no matter your age or your skin type is to consistently use an SPF daily. Although it may not feel like you need to in the winter time. UVA rays are present all year round and the damage caused by these harmful rays is really difficult to reverse. UVA rays are responsible for many signs of ageing like lines and wrinkles, age spots and pigmentation damage. Incorporate an SPF into your routine and avoid these signs of ageing. Choose a separate SPF from your moisturiser to ensure adequate protection.

Exfoliate

The process of exfoliation brings your complexion from dull to bright, vibrant, and smooth. Exfoliation is assistive to the process of cell regeneration, moving out the old cells to make way for the new. As we age, natural skin cell turnover slows, and the skin may need more help in clearing away old dead dry skin cells.  That’s when gentle exfoliation is most important as the skin thins with age. There are 2 main ways to exfoliate the skin Physically (with a product that contains a grain) and Chemically (with a product that contains an acid).

It is essential that you are gentle with your exfoliation to ensure you do not cause damage to the skins barrier. If using a physical scrub choose one with a soothing base like cocoa butter. Human+Kind’s Face Scrub helps the natural shedding process of skin and encourages brighter, fresher looking skin without the use of harmful micro beads. While the AHA cleanse from Skingredients is an active cleanser and micro-mask that contains 8% lactic acid and 1% PHA, which work in harmony to brighten, exfoliate, hydrate and plump the skin.

Moisturise

The surface of our skin is made up of a lipid barrier, this barrier is essential to keeping the skins moisture at an optimal level while also protecting us from harmful irritants that may cause our skin problems. This barrier acts as a barrier to prevent a loss of water from the skin’s surface.

This barrier is made up of Ceramides, fatty acids and cholesterol. As we age the amount of ceramides in the skin decrease and this can cause dryness, lines and wrinkles as well as the more serious consequence of a weaking of the barrier and skin irritations and infections.

Top up your skins ceramides and help protect the skins barrier with the Cerave Moisturising Cream an ideal Winter body moisturiser!
